Remotely manage your torrents from your iPhone [Transmission only]
There’s a great post by Milind over at Smoking Apples on remotely managing your torrents from your iPhone/iPod Touch. It’s a very complete step-by-step article. Note that this is only for the Transmission torrent client (which is the one I use).
iPhone 2.2 update released
Apple just released the latest version of the iPhone OS tonight. The coolest pieces are easily the Google Maps updates. For me the most important update is the Safari stability improvement – my Safari has been crashing ALL THE TIME. Very annoying. Maybe this update will help set things straight. The newest update includes the [...]
“First” multi-touch laptop from HP: TouchSmart tx2
Sort of cool: the new HP TouchSmart tx2. HP has teamed up with N-trig, the same company that helped Dell get touch capability on their Latitude XT (which didn’t originally have multi-touch, only single-touch). HP is likely using N-trig’s latest version of their DuoSense dual-mode digitizer, which uses capacitive touch. However, this is NOT the [...]
Outliers | a book review | Joel on Software
So I’m still excited to get Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers” (which gets delivered from Amazon today), despite the criticism by Michiko Kakutani, who basically gave the book a terrible review. I noticed this review on Joel Spolky’s blog: Joel on Software. Joel uses the summary of Michiko’s review as an introduction to a rant that has [...]

Forward thinking your way to success
It’s no secret that being able to think ahead in whatever project or process you’re involved in is a valuable skill. Being able to plan a process or envision your next business move is important to becoming successful. In a recent conversation with a business executive, I was introduced to a good rule of thumb [...]
G1: RC30 supposedly doesn’t change SIM unlock [unverified]
I’ve not been able to completely verify this, but I’ve heard through the grapevine that RC30 doesn’t effect the sim unlock, and only ruins the jailbreak (though the XDA developers have already found a way to keep your jailbroken status and have the RC30 update).
The future iPhone Xg: third generation release date
Disclaimer: I have no idea when the next iPhone will be released. All of my views are based on pure speculation, so don’t get mad when I’m wrong. That said, I do have some ideas about when it SHOULD be released. No earlier than 2010, on the third anniversary of the iPhone. There are two [...]
Adobe and ARM: not hand-in-hand with iPhone
Adobe and ARM just buddied up to accelerate the development of Adobe’s Flash and AIR for mobile devices. They have been building a mobile version of flash for a long time, called Flash Lite, but they are now focusing on building full featured Flash for mobile. Unfortunately for all of us with iPhones (which also [...]
Unibody MacBook: trackpad update
I never had any problems with my MacBook trackpad, but apparently others were getting missing clicks, especially on the MacBook Pros. Regardless, there’s a trackpad update to squash the bugs. Hopefully this settles the complaints…
Book List: Malcolm Gladwell
This past summer I really started focusing on taking some time out of my week to read. The books that I really enjoy are thought provoking books and, very appropriately, they have a table at Barnes and Noble labeled “Thought Provoking” – I couldn’t leave without buying a book (or two). One of the books [...]

iPhone development: memory management
Coming from Microsoft’s .NET environment, the first the thing that really frustrated me when I was trying to develop in Objective C 2.0 was the garbage collection. It felt like I was going “back to basics” with memory management. Honestly, this hurdle at first glance seems like a large hurdle to jump, but as I [...]
Unibody MacBook vs. Macbook Pro: Windows Experience Index and first impressions
First impressions with this MacBook – very speedy. I’ve loaded Windows Vista x86 onto my machine (shame on me, but I had to do it) and after installing the boot camp drivers I decided to see what the Windows Experience Index was. It got a 5.3! For comparison, my 2.6 Ghz 17″ MacBook Pro only [...]
iPhone able to compete with PSP and Nintendo DS?
Even before the first games were shown at the App Store, those of us with jailbroken phones were playing with the Super Nintendo emulator (snes4iPhone) downloaded from the trusty Installer application. We all knew that the iPhone was going to be a big hit, possibly even able to compete with the PSP and the Nintendo [...]
Macbook. Apple Discount. Go Time.
I broke down and bought it. The new 13″ Unibody MacBook. I have a 17″ Macbook Pro from work, but I’m a software developer that’s forced to stay in Windows most of the time. I felt that this warranted the expensive purchase of a more portable 13″ MacBook that provided better mobility and, most of [...]
